Student Resources - Chapter 6

Internet Activity 6.1

Education

The aim of this activity is to provide the opportunity of using the internet to begin to explore the different types of school that exist in contemporary Britain.

  1. Go to the school diversity section of the Standards Site of the Department for Children, Schools and Families website: www.standards.dfes.gov.uk/schooldiversity
  2. Explain in your own words what is meant by school diversity and identify four advantages that the government sees in school diversity.
  3. Follow the references on this page to a) Academies and b) Specialist Schools, and make notes explaining what they are and identifying three advantages in each case that the government thinks they have.
  4. Now try to find at least three criticisms which have been made of a) Academies and b) Specialist Schools. A Google search using city academies uk provides some useful leads on academies and www.notoacademies.org.uk   has some useful criticisms and links to other sites. A search using specialist schools uk  produces a good list of sources on specialist schools. Be prepared to look at a number of sites to find a range of criticisms.
  5. If you are doing this as part of a class exercise, write a short report of about 100 words on each of these two types of school explaining what they are and their advantages and disadvantages, and discuss your findings with others.
